Argyll Hotel Location
Tourist and local Information
Lochgilphead is a very pretty West Highland town
set amongst beautiful scenery at the head of a small branch of Loch
Fyne.
It is about 80 miles from Glasgow and your journey there will
take you along the bonny banks of Loch Lomond, over the breathtaking
mountain pass known as 'Rest-and-be-Thankful', round the head of Loch Fyne
and through the historic town of Inveraray. This journey itself with its
rich and varied pageant of scenery makes your trip to Mid Argyll worth
while.
Lochgilphead is Mid Argyll's main centre and as a base for
touring it is ideal, with many fascinating and rewarding places to visit
within easy reach. Worthy of mention are the fishing village of Tarbert,
the fine beaches of Ormsary, the Crinan Canal running from Ardrishaig
(near Lochgilphead) to Crinan on the west coast, the wooded splendour of
Knapdale and the beautiful freshwater Loch Awe.
The area has a
wealth of historic relics from its glorious past including Dunadd Hill,
first capital of Dalriada the kingdom which grew to become Scotland,
numerous castles and fortified houses, and from pre-historic times,
mysterious stone circles, standing stones, carved rocks and burial cairnes.
Lochgilphead itself has many fine building painted in the
pretty colours traditional to the west coast. The open sea front has a
superb view down Loch Fyne to the distant hills of Arran.
All in all, Lochgilphead is
an ideal choice for a West Highland holiday whatever your interests
are.
